Time Travel Log # 2

Information is the key to success. During the American Revolutionary War, the Colonists were outmatched by the might of the British military in every way. There were multiple points during the war where all seemed lost for the American Cause. The concept of spies and spying was not as romanticized as it is today in the post “James Bond” world. Spying was very dangerous work and while captured soldiers might become POWs and eventually exchanged, a spy was likely going to be hanged on the spot.

It was vital that information could be conveyed without betraying the sender as a spy. Unique and complicated codes were developed to pass along information by General George Washington’s spy chief, Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge. Among his military duties, Tallmadge was Washington’s liaison with the Culper Spy Ring which operated out of Long Island New York.

In the Bureau of Sequential Time & Anomalies’ Museum of Communication, our agents can learn all about the cipher code developed by Tallmadge and how it was used to win the war for the Americans. Below are some links where you can learn more about the history of the Culper Ring of Spies and see what inspired the designers at Baker Street Escapes in the design of our latest game, The Time Travelers at our Automobile Alley location.
